Tips to Rid Your Lawn of Moles

It is not easy to identify when a mole infestation occurs, as they rarely come to the surface. Moles’ natural habitat is the forest, but they are pretty at home in residential gardens, meadows, or farmland.

Moles feed on earthworms and other kinds of insects and their larvae. They have to eat their weight every day, which can kill earthworms in the soil.

Because moles cannot accumulate body fat, they must eat throughout the winter and do not hibernate. As a result, they are very active in the fall and early spring.

Moles make very distinctive mounds of soil in the lawn, which are the holes they use to go outside.

Newer soil mounds will be less consistent, and the soil used will be moist, while older soil mounds will be flat and compact.

Moles also cause elevations of the ground as they build their extensive tunnels. Mole tunnels also affect roots and can inhibit crops, flowering plants, and grassy areas. Mole tunnels can even bring stones to the surface, which will eventually affect lawnmowers.

The uneven terrain caused by molehills can also affect livestock and pets, which will have difficulty walking on the ground. So here are some remedies for lawn mole control:

Solar mole repellers: They are used for areas of approximately 500 square meters. This one produces vibrations at 30-second intervals. It uses rechargeable batteries that last up to 72 hours. If positioned in a sunny place, the solar panel can be recharged.

Ultrasonic mole repellers work with ultrasonic waves that repel rodents, allowing hygienic conditions in your house, kitchen, or crop.

Mole traps: you can use circular rodent traps, lures, snares, or even mousetraps.

Use of anti-moles plants: plants known as “anti-moles” such as the imperial crown, daffodils, incarvillea, or blackberry, which keep them away.

Mole predators: owls are natural predators of moles. You can buy nesting boxes and place them in strategic places in the garden, at the top of a tree. Don’t forget to fill them with straw.

Repellents for moles: such as castor oil. Mix 1/3 castor oil with two tablespoons of dish soap and 1/3 water. You will need to spread the mixture around the garden. Cayenne powder mixed with other products such as garlic, vegetable oil, soap, and water makes an exciting insecticide that, when placed in the garden, could repel not only moles but also other animals.

Windmills: locate windmills in the holes made by these mammals in your garden. Their spinning will cause annoying vibrations for those that will end up fleeing from their lair.

Plastic bottles: place plastic bottles in the tunnels with activity. The bottles must be open, i.e., remove the cap. When the wind blows through the bottle’s neck, it will produce an echoing sound and vibrations that are very annoying to moles.

If you are unsure about carrying out any of these ideas or the problem has gotten out of hand, look for professional lawn mole control; many will not hurt the mole and relocate it to an approved location.
