5 Tips for New Truck Drivers
If you are a newly trained truck driver, you are probably looking forward to getting out on the road and starting your new career. Before you start, here are a few tips you should keep in mind.
- Be Aware of the Laws
Abiding by traffic laws is more important than ever. Your company’s reputation and your own livelihood are at stake. Be sure that you know the laws of each state you are driving through. If you are involved in an accident or get a speeding ticket, it may be a good idea to contact commercial drivers license lawyers to get their opinion.
- Stay Aware of Your Trailer
When you are inspecting your truck prior to a trip, give your trailer the same scrutiny. While driving, be sure your trailer stays within the lines. Remember that an out-of-control trailer can be very dangerous.
- Eat Healthy Food
Don’t get into the habit of eating junk food just because you are out on the road. Even service stations have healthy food choices, such as eggs, cheese or nuts. Don’t eat too much sugar, or your energy will crash later. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Bring Some Maps
Don’t rely entirely on your GPS. You could end up somewhere with no signal, or your GPS could fail for some other reason. It is best to have a few maps of your route with you, too, just in case.
- Don’t Swerve for Animals
No matter how much of an animal lover you are, it is not safe to try and swerve your big rig to avoid an animal. Just slow down, grip the steering wheel and drive straight ahead. It’s the only safe thing to do.
Remember to stay safe on the road and stay healthy, too. Your career as a trucker is just starting, so be sure to make it a long and happy one.
